Dr. Robert H. Schuller Has Esophageal Cancer

Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman, eldest child and daughter of Dr. Robert H. and Arvella Schuller, announced that her father had esophageal cancer during her sermon on 8/25/13 at the Shepherd’s Grove church made up of what is left of Dr. Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral Congregation. Sheila said her father has esophageal cancer. It is about 3 inches long and has spread to some lymph nodes. He will go through chemo and radiation and the prognosis is between 3-months and up to 2-years, obviously the lesser time without treatment.  He will be (has been) undergoing treatment.  It was reported that the elder Schuller decided to pursue radiation and chemo after praying with his wife, Arvella, and other family members.

Schuller daughter, Carol Schuller Milner, told the associated press that the oncologists say her father’s tumor is either at or near stage 4, but it has yet to reach his vital organs and he has been strong enough for treatment.

Milner said her father "doesn't have a lot of energy" but has been "very reflective, very peaceful and truly beautiful."

"He's closer to Heaven than he is to this tangible world," Milner said.

I am a 17-year survivor of this same cancer. However, I am now 70 and was only 53 when diagnosed. The chemo and radiation put me the hospital for 45 days with a very bad pneumonia from which my team of doctors thought I would not recover. I fooled them along with a lot of prayers and positive thoughts. I subsequently had surgery to remove my esophagus in 1998 when the cancer started to reappear. This is a very deadly cancer. Mostly because it is not discovered in its early stages. From my experience, it sounds like a stage two or three diagnosis. I know many survivors of this disease at this stage and at this age. That being said, however, it must be noted that response to treatment is a very individual thing.

But keep up the prayers for Dr. Schuller, Sr.  There is always hope and prayer is powerful.  Just yesterday we heard that actress Valerie Harper is close to remission from brain cancer. Valerie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer earlier this year and given only a short time to live. But she fought back and is winning the battle, her cancer is close to remission; so much so that it was announced that she will be participating in season 17 of Dancing with the Stars.

We have several friends who have beaten the odds through prayer, positive thinking, combining alternative with traditional treatments and shear determination.  Miracles happen every day!!

Dr. Schuller says he has had a wonderful life.  He did what God called him to do and he has no regrets.  It really has been quite the life:

Dr. Schuller began preaching in 1955 from the top of a drive-in movie theater concession stand in Orange County with wife Arvella playing the organ and by 1970 they had launched their TV ministry with the "Hour of Power." The landmark cathedral was built in 1980 and with it were born the long-running Glory of Christmas and Easter pageants and their one season Glory of Creation counterpart.

At its peak, the Hour of Power broadcast attracted a viewership of 20 million around the world.  “But in recent years, Schuller's ministry was hamstrung by a disastrous leadership transition and then a decline in viewership and donations. The once-popular televangelist resigned from the church's board in 2012; about two years after that the ministry filed for bankruptcy”, said Carol Milner.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange bought the cathedral in bankruptcy proceedings and renamed the building Christ Cathedral and their southern campus which included a school, retreat center and small church was purchased by Hobby Lobby who leases it to Saddleback, another OC mega-church.

If there was ever an argument for positive thinking and determination as a cure, or at least a slowdown, for Cancer… Valerie Harper is it!!

Valerie Harper appears to be beating cancer and the actress has also made a decision to appear on Dancing with the Stars for 2013.

Valerie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer earlier this year and given only a short time to live.  But she fought back and is winning the battle, her cancer is close to remission.

So - why risk that and compete?

In an interview with AARP The Magazine over two days in July, Harper, 74, said, "As long as you’re alive, you can do something."

Many fans are anxious to see Valerie dance and expect a lot of tears and cheers for Harper as she competes on ABC's season 17 of DWTS.

The entire cast was revealed Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

NEW YORK (AP) -- Busy cancer patient Valerie Harper leads a class of 12 amateur hoofers in the upcoming 17th season of "Dancing With the Stars."

The cast was revealed Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America." For the reality show that has reached an increasingly older audience, ABC added an injection of youth with reality stars Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi of "Jersey Shore" and  Sharon and Ozzy's son, Jack Osbourne.

Harper has defied odds with her survival since being diagnosed earlier this year with brain cancer. She recently filmed a movie role and joined a Nick at Nite reunion of "The Mary Tyler Moore" cast.

Other contestants are singer actress Christina Milian; actress Elizabeth Berkley "Glee" actress Amber Riley; and "King of Queens" actress Leah Remini.

Also on the show this season…

Reality star Jack Osbourne will also give dancing a shot.  If you remember, his sister finished in 3rd place several years back.

WHO: Cell phone use can increase possible cancer risk

(CNN) -- Radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The agency now lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform.

Before its announcement Tuesday, WHO had assured consumers that no adverse health effects had been established.

A team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, made the decision after reviewing peer-reviewed studies on cell phone safety. The team found enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as "possibly carcinogenic to humans."

What that means is they found some evidence of increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for mobile phone users, but have not been able to draw conclusions for other types of cancers

"The biggest problem we have is that we know most environmental factors take several decades of exposure before we really see the consequences," said Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The type of radiation coming out of a cell phone is called non-ionizing. It is not like an X-ray, but more like a very low-powered microwave oven.

"What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain," Black said. "So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones."

Wireless industry responded to Tuesday's announcement saying it "does not mean cell phones cause cancer." CTIA-The Wireless Association added that WHO researchers "did not conduct any new research, but rather reviewed published studies."

The European Environmental Agency has pushed for more studies, saying cell phones could be as big a public health risk as smoking, asbestos and leaded gasoline. The head of a prominent cancer-research institute at the University of Pittsburgh sent a memo to all employees urging them to limit cell phone use because of a possible risk of cancer.

"When you look at cancer development -- particularly brain cancer -- it takes a long time to develop. I think it is a good idea to give the public some sort of warning that long-term exposure to radiation from your cell phone could possibly cause cancer," said Dr. Henry Lai, research professor in bioengineering at University of Washington who has studied radiation for more than 30 years.

Results from the largest international study on cell phones and cancer was released in 2010. It showed participants in the study who used a cell phone for 10 years or more had doubled the rate of brain glioma, a type of tumor. To date, there have been no long-term studies on the effects of cell phone usage among children.

"Children's skulls and scalps are thinner. So the radiation can penetrate deeper into the brain of children and young adults. Their cells are at a dividing faster rate, so the impact of radiation can be much larger." said Black of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

In February, a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, revealed radiation emitted after just 50 minutes on a mobile phone increases the activity in brain cells. The effects of brain activity being artificially stimulated are still unknown.

Neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta says Tuesday's announcement, "dealt a blow to those who have long said, 'There is no possible mechanism for cell phones to cause cancer.' By classifying cell phones as a possible carcinogen, they also seem to be tacitly admitting a mechanism could exist."

Manufacturers of many popular cell phones already warn consumers to keep their device away from their body and medical experts say there other ways to minimize cell phone radiation.

The Apple iPhone 4 safety manual says users' radiation exposure should not exceed FCC guidelines: "When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 millimeters (5/8 inch) away from the body."

BlackBerry Bold advises users to "keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inch (25 millimeters) from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting."

The logic behind such recommendations is that the further the phone is from the body, the less radiation is absorbed. Users can also use the speakerphone function or a wired earpiece to gain some distance.

Users can text instead of talk if they want to keep the phone away from their faces.

Finally, cell phones emit the most radiation when they are attempting to connect to cellular towers. A moving phone, or a phone in an area with a weak signal, has to work harder, giving of more radiation. So users can avoid using their cell phones in elevators, buildings and rural areas if they want to reduce their exposure, experts say.

Gosh is there anyone out there other than me that just wants to scream “DUH!!!  And what scares me the most, is that we are exposing our young children to this daily.  Kids don’t need cell phones for a lot of reasons… more cons than pros and here is another big one!
