Life in a Dog Pack: Old Age

When you live in a dog pack, eventually, if you are very lucky, you will experience life with an old dog. Tally, at 15 years four months, is the oldest dog it has been our good fortune to share our lives with.
Living with a geriatric dog means that every day is a new adventure. Not only are there the regular routine activities of meals, potty breaks, and medications, we try to remain sensitive to Tally’s limitations, adapting to them as new challenges arise, so that we can ensure that she is as happy and comfortable as we can keep her.
We’ve placed cheap runners and area rugs strategically so that Tally can move about without being forced to navigate bare wood floors. As she’s gotten weaker over the years her ability to manage bare floors has diminished and we’ve changed to take that into account.
Tally no longer sleeps with us. She gave up climbing stairs several years ago and since then we’ve left her on her own recognizance on the first floor. Generally, she’s just fine there—she’s always preferred her own company—but, occasionally, we’ll hear a yelp and rush downstairs to find she’s trapped herself beneath a chair, slipped off the rugs we’ve placed for her convenience and safety, or walked into a corner and is too befuddled to make her way out without assistance.
On rare occasions she’s had nighttime “accidents”. That’s just the cost of doing business. She’s always very embarrassed about it.
Walks have become increasingly rare. She wants to walk and sometimes demands a walk but we understand that she really doesn’t have as much ability to handle a long walk as she thinks she does. I’m not prepared to carry a tired fifty pound dog home in my arms so we limit her walks to three or four blocks, sometimes just a block depending on how she feels that particular day.
She wants to play ball but, sadly, her vision is failing so, if you throw the ball more than a few feet away from her, she won’t be able to find it. My wife is better at playing ball with Tally these days than I am.
Every night we have the same ritual. I’ll let her out the back door for her final nightly elimination and she won’t come back in until I’ve chased her one slow circumnavigation around our backyard, then helped her up the two stairs into the house. The joy in her eyes during these low speed chases is a delight to see. I’ve taken to calling her “the White Bronco”.
Last night we had something of a scare. When she rose from a nap she began a series of odd, hopping bounds. She wouldn’t stop. It was quite alarming.
We moved the other dogs elsewhere in the house and let her outside. She continued the hopping. My wife thought it was some sort of neurological malfunction. I thought she’d awoken with a stitch in her leg and, like an athlete with a leg cramp, was trying to run it out. She was unable to put weight on her left foreleg but wasn’t strong enough to maintain her balance and stand in one place. Hence the odd, forward-moving, hopping bound.
After a while she stopped and, although she was still hobbling a bit, she was behaving much more normally. I gave her an extra half Rimadyl before we went to sleep and this morning she’s shown no signs of a return to her previous condition.
It was, however, a reminder that Tally won’t be with us a great deal longer and we must savor every moment we have with her. We are resolved that Tally will enjoy her life as long as she lives. So far, so good.
The other dogs show Tally considerable deference, each in their own way. Will is extremely fond of her. Nola gives her a wide berth (although she’s not above stealing some of Tally’s food when she has the chance—stolen food always tastes better). Smidge, with typical Australian Shepherd temperament, is worried about her. She herds her, blocks her from moving into spaces she thinks are too dangerous for her (Smidge and Tally have different views on this subject), and sleeps curled up with her. It’s like having her own personal sheep.
I don’t know how our pack dynamics will change when Tally is no longer with us. It’s not something I look forward to. Although she’s always been highly independent, she and Jenny made us into a pack. Tally taught us all to howl.

Excerpt:
Samples of milk taken across the United States have shown radiation at levels 2000 percent higher than EPA maximums. The reason that milk is so significant is that it is representative of the entire food supply. According to an article published on Natural News, “Cows consume grass and are exposed to the same elements as food crops and water supplies. In other words, when cows’ milk starts testing positive for high levels of radioactive elements, this is indicative of radioactive contamination of the entire food supply.”;
The Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Deception Protection Agency, instead of refusing to prohibit the sale of tainted foods and mandatory testing of foods produced and harvested from the Pacific Coast, have simply raised the “acceptable levels”; of radioactive material in foods.
If that doesn’t scare the ever-living crap out of you, then take a look at the list of foods you are now supposed to be wary of, you know, for only the next 30,000 years.
How can we protect ourselves? First, be aware of what items are likely to be highly tainted.
1.) SEAFOOD: Question the origin of ALL seafood. Fish and crustaceans from the Pacific Ocean should all be considered to be poisoned with radiation.
2.) WATER: The rainfall and snowfall are all radiated. Do not drink any water that has not been filtered. The tap water that flows from your faucet has NOT been treated to rid it of radioactive particles. A recent report from the NY Times stated, “A rooftop water monitoring program managed by UC Berkeley’s Department of Nuclear Engineering detected substantial spikes in rain-borne iodine-131 during torrential downpours …;
3.) DAIRY PRODUCTS: Milk and milk products from the West Coast states currently have the highest levels of radiation in North America.
4.) PRODUCE: Leafy Vegetables, Wines, Tomatoes, Strawberries….all produce from California or any other West Coast State are also likely to be tainted.
5.) MEAT: If an animal eats any leafy vegetable all along the West Coast, that animal has consumed radiation, and is poisoned. This is any animal from cows, pigs, goats, sheep to wild deer and other game.
If you eat the above foods from areas with high radiation levels, you are eating radiation and feeding it to your children. Slowly the radiation levels within your body will build up. This is PERMANENT.
Infant mortality rates across the United States have increased by more than 35% since the nuclear disaster, according to a court statement by Dr. Sherman with independent scientist Leuren Moret, MA, PhD. A study published in The International Journal of Medicine indicates that more than 20,000 deaths right here in North America can be directly attributed to the release of radioactive material from Fukushima.
Radioactive isotopes of the type released from Fukushima have a half-life of 30,000 years. This means that we must permanently change the way we prepare our food.

Funded by the utility companies under the auspices of the public utility commissions, the Department of Energy and with White House directives along with stimulus funding, we were all FOOLED. . Private Corporations are taking over our cities and we are being systematically transformed into regional governments . . . Our futures are being reshaped under the name of sustainability. . We are not getting choices - we are being told what we can or cannot do by unelected officials in corporate agencies - and we have lost our local representative government.

How did all this happen to us? Government Agencies have perfected the Rand Institute's Delphi Technique . . a technique used in "every" level on public meetings, every creation of public policy, every decision you think you make has been engineered by the Rand Institute. All the alphabet corporate agencies are under the mother corporation of USA, Inc., and we have all been socially engineered by predetermined outcomes and told we have been part of open public debate, and we have not. . . All the years that many of us in Northern California have invested at the CPUC meetings, speaking out against the smart meters, has been engineered for the advancement of the predetermined outcomes as determined by the mega corporations and the international bankers using the Delphi Technique . . .
Here is what we found out - "Every" planning department in every city in the United States was required to create a "Climate Action Plan" or also referred to as an "Energy Action Plan" by the fall of 2012. . some cities completed their plan on time and other cities are still working on their plan. The utility company in each city is working directly with that city planning department to create the plan. . in the lawless system we are now in this is not considered a conflict of interest. BUT it gets far WORSE - for example in the "Energy Action Plan" for San Gabriel, San Marino and Covina (in Southern California) the plans state the following, in the Energy Action Plan Acknowledgements - This "Energy Action Plan" was prepared by PMC for the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and the named city. The preparation of this Plan was funded by Southern California Edison as part of the Local Government Strategic Plan Strategies Program funding for the 2010 - 2012 Program Period under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission" . . . another example in Santa Rosa, in Northern California - the "Climate Action Plan" was based upon work supported by the Department of Energy Award Number DE-SC00001512 and further stating, "the report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government. Prepared by PMC with assistance from Sonoma State University Center for Sustainable Communities". Santa Rosa's Climate Action plan also states the following:
Sonoma County and the other nine municipalities in Sonoma County, established one of the most aggressive GHG reduction targets in the state and nation by committing to reduce GHG emissions 25% below 1990 levels by 2015.
This project was funded through an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. One of the goals of the EECBG program is to facilitate planning efforts and projects that will have a quantifiable effect on reducing energy use and GHG emissions while stimulating the economy and creating jobs.
Measure 1.2: Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings
Facilitate energy efficiency upgrades and retrofits in existing commercial, residential, and industrial buildings by connecting residents and businesses with technical and financial assistance.
Action Items:
Action 1.2.1. Connect businesses and residents with voluntary programs that provide free or low-cost energy efficiency audits and financing assistance for energy- efficient appliances.
Action 1.2.2. Work with the Sonoma County Energy Independence Program (SCEIP) to offer low-interest financing and technical assistance to property owners for energy efficiency retrofits.
Santa Rosa - Measure 1.3: Smart Meter Utilization
Encourage existing development and require new development to utilize PG&E's Smart Meter system to facilitate energy and cost savings.
Action Items:
Action 1.3.1. Require new construction and major remodels to install real-time energy monitors that allow building users to track their current energy use.
Action 1.3.2. Inform the community of metering options, such as online applications and in-home monitors.
Action 1.3.3. Connect businesses and residents with rebate programs that give priority to appliances with smart grid technology.
Measure 1.6: Energy-Efficient Appliances
Facilitate the efficient use of energy for appliances in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
Action Items:
Action 1.6.1. Seek funding sources to develop a rebate program for residents and businesses to exchange inefficient appliances with Energy Star certified models.

Cost estimates in the "Energy Action Plan" in San Gabriel to retrofit the average residence is $2,000 to $5,000 per household . . .
These plans discuss how increasing taxes, getting grants (bribes), structuring retrofit home mortgages to meet the costs requirements to implement the GHG reduction commitments agreed to by your city, for you. . .household and business monitoring programs will enforce the "required" reduction of resource use. . A third party energy manager will conduct monitoring, annually, to verify target GHG reductions are being met by the cities. Keep in mind the partnerships are Private Public Partnerships . .

Lack of pipeline repair is why those suffered and died in the San Bruno Gas Pipeline Explosion, providing the story of what occurred, is correct. The elimination of natural gas will explain why PG&E intentionally withheld repairs to the gas manifolds (meters) located on thousands of homes and businesses in Northern California. A PG&E gas employee went to the CPUC and the media when he discovered PG&E's internal documents that divulged criminal intent. Here is a reminder of that event:

The StopTheCrime.net research team attended a PG&E Gas employee's meeting, in Northern California, and reported the following:
The gas employees were questioning management about why they were not filling the nearly 200 vacant job positions and why many excellent applicants were not be called back, much less hired.
Management responded by saying they were planning to update the gas department with newer technologies and younger employees that were computer literate. That brought on a concerned debate with employees questioning their futures and the fact that management said they were an aging work force . . .The employees talked about a few resent young hires that were "completely" unskilled for gas work . .
Most importantly, it was divulged that PG&E gas employees had not had any official company training for gas leak repairs. The employees said they learned by working with the older experienced gas crews. . . Management told the employees that they were qualified experts and not to forget that.

Another OBAMACARE PROVISION: "FORCED" HOME INSPECTIONS
BenSwann: “Clearly, any family may be visited by federally paid agents for almost any reason.”; According to an Obamacare provision millions of Americans will be targeted.
The Health and Human Services’ website states that your family will be targeted if you fall under the “high-risk” categories below:
- Families where mom is not yet 21.
- Families where someone is a tobacco user.
- Families where children have low student achievement, developmental delays, or disabilities.
- Families with individuals who are serving or formerly served in the armed forces, including such families that have members of the armed forces who have had multiple deployments outside the United States.
There is no reference to Medicaid being the determinant for a family to be “eligible.”;
In 2011, the HHS announced $224 million will be given to support evidence-based home visiting programs to “help parents and children.” Individuals from the state will implement these leveraging strategies to “enhance program sustainability.”;
Constitutional attorney and author Kent Masterson Brown states,
“This is not a “voluntary” program. The eligible entity receiving the grant for performing the home visits is to identify the individuals to be visited and intervene so as to meet the improvement benchmarks. A homeschooling family, for instance, may be subject to “intervention” in “school readiness” and “social-emotional developmental indicators.” A farm family may be subject to “intervention” in order to “prevent child injuries.” The sky is the limit.
Although the Obama administration would claim the provision applies only to Medicaid families, the new statute, by its own definition, has no such limitation. Intervention may be with any family for any reason. It may also result in the child or children being required to go to certain schools or taking certain medications and vaccines and even having more limited – or no – interaction with parents. The federal government will now set the standards for raising children and will enforce them by home visits.”;
Part of the program will require massive data collecting of private information including all sources of income and the amount gathered from each source.
A manual called Child Neglect: A Guide for Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention includes firearms as potential safety hazard and will require inspectors to verify safety compliance and record each inspection into a database.
Last session South Carolina Rep. Bill Chumley introduced a bill, H.3101 that would nullify certain provisions of Obamacare. The bill would give the state attorney general the authority to authorize law enforcement to arrest federal agents for trespassing. It would make forced home inspections under Obamacare illegal in South Carolina. It passed in the House but died in the senate.

What a Survey of 1,400 Sued Doctors Can Tell Us About Health Care Reform
The Razor: Ever wonder how malpractice lawsuits turn out and what their effects on physicians are? Then click here for a slideshow showing the results of a study of 1,400 physicians who were sued for malpractice. There are several interesting points to take from this survey, including the fact that the majority of plaintiffs, 57%, received no monetary reward. But the one thing that stands out by far should be the advice these doctors give on slide 22:
- Follow up even when you think you don’t have to.
- Practice more defensive medicine.
- Document more often, more thoroughly.
- Get rid of rude, demanding, noncompliant patients.
Anyone who expects doctors, particularly primary care physicians (who also happen to be the most likely to be sued) to take on the responsibility of lowering health care costs by ordering fewer unnecessary tests and procedures (I’m looking at you Professor Mead) are simply delusional. Doctors do not have any incentive to stop ordering these procedures, quite the opposite. Whenever they rule out a particular test they must consider a bullet-proof and infallible reason why the test is not required in case they have to testify on the Stand to support their decision. In medicine, as in life, there are few situations that can attain such a level of infallibility. A runny nose can indicate a cold or allergy in a hundred thousand cases but it can also can result from a leak of cerebral-spinal fluid into the nasal cavity in rare instances. Should a doctor order the highly invasive – and expensive – test to rule out this leak in the snot-faced six year old kid sniffling in front of her? This is an extreme example of course, but the point stands: why should doctors risk being sued, a type of punishment judging by the emotional toll the survey shows, for trying to contain costs?
It would seem to me that if you want to reduce unnecessary testing you would address the reasons why they are ordered in the first place, yet this has not been done. While some states have attempted to limit the maximum amount a plaintiff can be awarded from a successful malpractice suit, none have made laws to make it harder to file them in the first place. The cynic may see the hand of self-interest here, with the lawyers who write the laws the ones also profiting from malpractice lawsuits. After all, scientifically dubious malpractice lawsuits almost elevated former Sen. John Edwards to the White House. But to ask doctors to refrain from ordering unnecessary tests and procedures without legal reform is like asking them to commit professional suicide.
The last item is particularly interesting. Legally doctors in private practice do not have to treat everyone who comes through the door. They can turn down patients for any reason. Once they establish a relationship with a patient they can also terminate that care at any time as long as they do not abandon them, usually by offering to care for them for a period of time when they can establish care with another provider. Many medical system reformers have talked zealously about basing payments to doctors on the success based measures, for example, on how well their diabetes patients’ blood sugar levels are controlled. Every practice has a coterie of diabetes patients who are non-compliant. They come in suffering from associated illnesses and for whatever reason refuse to control their blood sugar levels through exercise and diet, then expect the doctor to fix them. Such outcome based reimbursement schemes will only lead to doctors drafting letters telling these patients to find another provider. But even for doctors who aren’t reimbursed partly based on outcomes, it is in their interest to get rid of these patients who are more likely to complain and perhaps sue them.
Doctors have done a poor job at getting their point across in the health care debate in America. This is partly due to the nature of the profession, which tends to operate in solo or small groups and not think in broader terms the way other professions such as teachers and lawyers have done. It is also due to the corruption of the American Medical Association through years of operation in Washington DC reaching it’s pinnacle in the organization’s support of Obamacare in 2010 against the best interests of its own membership (but in line with the leftist ideology of the organization’s staff). But doctors had better learn quickly because if they don’t their profession will become extinct, and the healthcare of Americans will be even worse than it is today… much worse!

Blue Cross, Aetna, United, Humana Flee Obamacare Exchanges
CBSNews: Major health insurance companies – Blue Cross, Aetna, United, Humana – have fled the Obamacare health care exchanges in various states, which are scheduled to start on Oct. 1st, 2014.
Insurance companies like Aetna and United have said, “thanks, but no thanks” to the public health insurance marketplace set up under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare, which will facilitate government subsidies to individuals and small businesses to buy approved health plans to comply with the law.
The ACA requires every American to have health insurance, or pay a penalty. Individuals who are not covered by their employer can enroll in the state or federal government-run health care “marketplace,” which will provide subsidies to individuals between 100 and 400 percent of the poverty line.
Aetna, a fortune 100 company with $34.2 billion in revenue, has pulled out of public exchanges in three states, and will not be part of the individual health insurance exchange in its home base, Connecticut.
Founded in Hartford, Conn., in 1850, Aetna withdrew its application to participate in the state on Monday, due to high rates proposed by state regulators, the Hartford Courant reported.
“We have spent considerable time identifying those states in which we can be competitive and add the most value to the market,” Aetna said in a statement. “As a result of our analysis, we have reluctantly concluded that we will withdraw certain Individual Exchange filings for 2014, including filings in Connecticut, Georgia and Maryland.”
“This is not a step taken lightly, and was made as part of a national review of our Exchange strategy,” the company said. “Unfortunately, we believe the modifications to the rates filed by Aetna will not allow us to collect enough premiums to cover the cost of the plans and meet the service expectations of our customers.”
California
Aetna will also not participate in California’s exchange, and a spokesperson told CNSNews.com that the company never intended to do so.

“We did not withdraw exchange plans in California, as we never planned participation nor filed [Qualified Health Plans] QHPs to participate in the California exchange,” a spokesperson said.
Anthem Blue Cross has withdrawn from its bid to participate in the state’s small business exchange, as well.
United Health Group, the largest health insurer in the United States, has also taken a pass on the Golden State’s individual insurance market under Obamacare.
As a result, roughly 8,000 policyholders will be left searching for new insurance.
Aetna will stop selling individual insurance policies in California all together, leaving nearly 50,000 existing policyholders to find new coverage by January.
‘If You Like Your Doctor,’ Hope Your Insurer Is Participating in the Exchange
“No matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period,” Obama said on June 15, 2009.
“If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period," he said. "No one will take it away. No matter what.”
That promise, however, has been revised by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which now says, “you may be able to keep your current doctor” in the health insurance marketplace.
“Most health insurance plans offered in the Marketplace have networks of hospitals, doctors, specialists, pharmacies, and other health care providers,” HHS said on its website for the health reform law. “Networks include health care providers that the plan contracts with to take care of the plan’s members.”
“Depending on the type of policy you buy, care may be covered only when you get it from a network provider,” they said.

With insurers opting out of state-run health exchanges, individuals are left with less options.
Only three companies remain in Connecticut’s “Access Health CT” exchange, following Aetna’s departure.
Similarly, only five plans are participating in the exchange in Georgia, after Aetna and Coventry Health Insurance dropped out last week.
The Savannah Morning News noted that this will “leave residents of some parts of the state with limited choice.”
Two of the three largest health insurers in Wisconsin will also not participate in the state’s online marketplace under Obamacare, it was announced on Wednesday.
Though they will not participate in at least four state-run exchanges, Aetna said they “appreciate” the opportunity to work with state regulators on complying with the ACA.
“We have appreciated the chance to work with the regulators in each state for the past months on a variety of key issues regarding ACA implementation,” Aetna said in a statement. “We will continue to work with them, and various Exchange leadership teams, as we evaluate exchange participation in future years.”
