Michael Douglas – the star of Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction – has revealed that his throat cancer was apparently caused by performing oral sex.

In a surprisingly frank interview with the Guardian, the actor, now winning plaudits in the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, explained the background to a condition that was thought to be nearly fatal when diagnosed three years ago. Asked whether he now regretted his years of smoking and drinking, usually thought to be the cause of the disease, Douglas replied: "No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papilloma virus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus."

Douglas, the husband of Catherine Zeta Jones, continued: "I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it."

The actor, now 68, was diagnosed with cancer in August 2010, following many months of oral discomfort. But a series of specialists missed the tumor and instead prescribed antibiotics. Douglas then went to see a friend's doctor in Montreal who looked inside his mouth using a tongue depressor.

"I will always remember the look on his face," Douglas has previously said. "He said: 'We need a biopsy.' There was a walnut-size tumor at the base of my tongue that no other doctor had seen."

Shortly afterwards he was diagnosed with stage four cancer, which is often terminal, and embarked on an intensive eight-week course of chemotherapy and radiation. He refused to use a feeding tube, despite his palate being burnt on account of the treatment, and so lost 20kg (45lb) on a liquids-only diet. "That's a rough ride. That can really take it out of you," he told the Guardian. "Plus the amount of chemo I was getting, it zaps all the good stuff too. It made me very weak."

The treatment worked and Douglas is now more than two years clear of cancer. He has check-ups every six months, he said, "and with this kind of cancer, 95% of the time it doesn't come back".

The cause of Douglas's cancer had long been assumed to be related to his tobacco habit, coupled with enthusiastic boozing. In 1992, he was hospitalized for an addiction which some at the time claimed to be sex. Douglas himself denied this and said he was in rehab for alcohol abuse. He has also spoken of recreational drug use.

HPV, the sexually transmitted virus best known as a cause of cervical and anal cancer and genital warts, is thought to be responsible for an increasing proportion of oral cancers.

Some suggest that changes in sexual behavior – a rise in oral sex in particular – are responsible. Such changes might be cultural, but could also be linked to fears about the safety of penetrative sex in the wake of the Aids epidemic.

Mahesh Kumar, a consultant head and neck surgeon in London, confirmed that the last decade has seen a dramatic rise in this form of cancer, particularly among younger sufferers. Recent studies of 1,316 patients with oral cancer found that 57% of them were HPV-16 positive.

"It has been established beyond reasonable doubt that the HPV type 16 is the causative agent in oropharyngeal cancer," said Kumar, who also testified to increased recovery rates among this kind of cancer sufferer. This would help explain why Douglas was given an 80% chance of survival, despite the advanced stage of his illness.

But Kumar expressed scepticism that Douglas's cancer was caused solely by HPV, and surprise at Douglas's assertion that cunnilingus could also help cure the condition. "Maybe he thinks that more exposure to the virus will boost his immune system. But medically, that just doesn't make sense."

Ann Robinson, a GP, expressed interest in how confirmation of this association would affect the rollout of the HPV vaccine, which is currently restricted in the UK. "My main priority with diagnosing a patient with oral cancer is to get them referred, as early intervention can be so crucial. Asking for a detailed sexual history would be inappropriate at that stage."

Douglas has two children, aged 10 and 12, with his second wife, Zeta Jones, as well as an older son, Cameron, from a previous marriage. In 2010, Cameron was sentenced to five years in prison for drugs possession and dealing, and a year later had his sentence extended until 2018 after he pleaded guilty to possessing drugs in prison.

HPV: the facts

• There are more than 100 variants of HPV (human papilloma virus). They appear in different parts of the body and manifest themselves in different ways – some cause warts, but most are symptomless.

• Some are spread by skin-to-skin contact, while others are typically spread during sex. When HPV is found in the mouth, it probably got there as a result of oral sex.

• HPV is common – if you're a sexually active adult, you've probably had it. By the age of 25, 90% of sexually active people will have been exposed to some form of genital HPV.

• Around 15 types of HPV are linked to increased cancer risk, but it can't be explicitly said to cause any particular cancers. It's a long-term risk factor: over years and decades the risk is increased, rather than overnight.

• It is calculated that between 25% and 35% of oral cancers are HPV-related – meaning that it seems to be involved in 1,500-2,000 diagnoses a year.

• Overall, HPV-related oral cancers are most common in heterosexual men in their 40s and 50s.

• Teenage girls in the UK and elsewhere are now vaccinated against HPV, which should in time both protect them from cervical cancers and – it's believed – future partners from HPV-related oral cancers.

Since Douglas gave his interview and this piece was originally posted, Michael Douglas has tried to walk back his comments, even though the Guardian claims they have the interview on video.  It is all sounding more and more like a lot of publicity hype for Behind the Candelabra.  The real question is:  Is there something worthwhile to discuss from all of this?

Cervarix Just as Dangerous as Gardasil

It seems that GlaxoSmithKline's alternative to deadly Gardasil is just about as unsafe, with one 13-year-old entering into a ‘waking coma’ only one day after receiving a Cervarix vaccination. She now sleeps for 23 hours per day, after being unable to walk or talk after receiving the HPV shot at school.

Told that the vaccine had very few side-effects and would protect their daughter from cervical cancer, parents Steve and Pauline Hinks allowed their young daughter to receive the shot as any unsuspecting parents would. Even after their daughter experienced adverse reactions from the MMR vaccine, the parents were urged by nurses to let their daughter receive the Cervarix jab.

Her mother explained:

"I was concerned about the potential side-effects because Lucy had a severe reaction from the MMR vaccine. But I was reassured by the school nurse that side-effects were extremely unlikely. We feel betrayed because, like most parents, we trust the health authorities with our children’s lives."

Similar Gardasil stories have been reported, and it is no coincidence that these parents initially believe the vaccine to be safe and effective. In a recent report centered around Merck’s advertising campaign, it was found that there was absolutely no mention of the Gardasil death link, or even other serious adverse reactions that been continually reported after injection.

Their daughter was reported to be in excellent health before the shot, and was among the top students in her year.
Cervarix is given to girls aged 12 and 13 under a nationwide program which started in September 2008. Already linked to 4,445 side effects, a number of which have been quite severe, parents who do not want to subject their child to the shot must opt out. Interestingly, the 4,445 side effects occurred within the program’s first 2 years, such adverse reactions included:

• 1,669 reports of ‘injection-site reactions’
• 1,013 reported allergic reactions and rashes
• 3,591 other ‘recognized reactions’ including 631 cases of nausea and 629 headaches
• 4 cases of nerve disease Guillan-Barre Syndrome, which can lead to paralysis and even death.

Of course many of these reported side effects are quite mild, and it may soon come out that there are a number of hidden deaths and more significant adverse reactions associated with Cervarix. Such was the case with Gardasil, with FDA documents released through the Freedom of Information Act detailing 26 previously unknown deaths associated with the HPV shot.

It is quite apparent that Cervarix is not a safe alternative to Gardasil.

Merck’s Profits Explode as Government-Backed HPV Shot Gardasil Sales Skyrocket

Mega drug manufacturer Merck & Co. is reporting a major increase in third-quarter profits due in part to the skyrocketing sales of death-linked HPV shot Gardasil – up 41 percent to $445 million thanks to government backing and a hugely successful yet deceptive ad campaigns targeted at unsuspecting parents and children. The overall value of Merck shares rose 80 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $35.11. The numbers are up from a year ago, when the company was hit with huge acquisition and legal charges. Of course behind  the monetary surge in Gardasil sales is the horribly corrupt marketing and political techniques used to boost Merck out of economic downfall.

When it comes to Gardasil, Merck is more concerned about pushing the shot on children and generating a profit than examining the true effects of the shot.

Merck pushes Gardasil on children through omission of facts, political bribery, and blatant lies

How could Merck sell Gardasil in such high quantities despite documentation linking it to  3,589 harmful reactions and 16 deaths between May 2009 and September 2010 alone? Well, Merck likes to pretend that the death link does not exist. Furthermore, Merck uses monetary incentive, also considered bribery, to ensure that Gardasil legislation is swiftly passed by key legislators. Because when it comes to generating profit, Merck has no concern for the health of the individual — especially the target demographic of boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 12.

In order to push Gardasil as a “safe” vaccine, Merck will go as far as to blatantly lie about the side effects of the HPV shot in magazine ads, website banner ads, and even on the official Gardasil website. In my special report on Gardasil ads, I documented how Merck supplements the real known side effects of Gardasil such as death and Guillain-Barre Syndrome for less threatening ones such as headache and nausea.

As for political bribery, Merck has been caught by Cal Watchdog supplying key California legislators with thousands of dollars. Of course these key legislators were instrumental in the passing of the Gardasil bill that now allows for 12 year old children to decide whether or not they would like to be injected with the Gardasil vaccine without any parental consent. Given deceptive information about the HPV shot Gardasil, it is reasonable to believe that these young children would consider the shot to be relatively harmless. Unfortunately, those who do not follow health news are oftentimes in the dark over Gardasil dangers.

The dangers of Gardasil are so extensive that a timeline has been made documenting just the past several months in developments. As more information continues to come out, Merck may soon see a significant decrease in Gardasil profits.

Hard truth about mandatory shot that so far has gone ‘untrumpeted’

When Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., raised the Gardasil question to Texas Gov. Rick Perry during the GOP presidential debates, the old-stream media immediately attacked her for holding an unseemly position: That the vaccine potentially was dangerous and certainly should not be imposed by the government on young girls.

The Bachmann attack "may be hurting her considerably more than him," stated the International Business Times, citing her narrative about a mother who complained the treatment had injured her daughter. "Bachmann did not offer any scientific evidence to suggest there is actually a viable link between Gardasil and mental retardation."

The report said, "Of the 35 million doses of Gardasil distributed in the U.S., only about 0.05 percent of individuals who have been vaccinated have reported some kind of side effect, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mental retardation was not one of them."

The Washington Post joined the criticism, saying, "Her offense quickly turned to defense when her comments were criticized by an extremely long list of groups and people, including Rush Limbaugh, the Washington Post editorial board, Ryan Lizza of the New Yorker, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control.

"In the wake of Bachmann's comments," the report continued, "there doesn't seem to be a rush of stories questioning the safety of Gardasil. There appears to be only one such story: a WISH-TV Indianapolis report about Zeda Pingel, whose mother claims she's suffered health problems after being vaccinated."

The Student Life publication at Washington University accused Bachmann of making verbal gaffes.

'SCARY MEDICINE: Exposing the dark side of vaccines'

"The virus itself is the most common sexually transmitted infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control, some 50 percent of sexually active American adults will contract HPV during their lifetimes. HPV is a very real problem, and this vaccine can help prevent its spread.

"With women comprising half our population, that this claim, which can do nothing but hurt women's health, was made is concerning," the group said.

But it sounds so different when you refer to a paltry 0.05 percent of a large number of people rather than explaining just what happened to the 17,500 individuals who have suffered side effects like Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Bell's Palsy and even death.

The election campaign issue is that Perry issued an executive order requiring young girls in Texas to be given the vaccine. He did allow an opt-out procedure, and his order was countermanded by the state legislature before the inoculations began.

But Bachmann, who has raised her own children as well as acted as a foster parent for dozens more, said the issue is liberty and whether the government should control the lives of its citizens.

In the debate,she said Perry's act was "a violation of liberty interests."

"We cannot forget in the midst of this executive order, there was a big drug company that made millions of dollars because of this mandate," she continued. "Is it about life or about millions of dollars for a drug company?"

Perry said the donation from the vaccine maker, Merck, was only $5,000 and he was insulted if Bachmann was suggesting he could be "bought for $5,000."

"I'm offended for all the little girls who didn't have a choice. That's what I'm offended for," she responded.

Neither the Bachmann nor the Perry campaigns returned WND requests for comment today.

But critics of Perry point out that the vaccine is supposed to address a disease only transmitted by sexual activity, and the issue isn't the mundane, clinical argument that Gardasil supporters portray.

At the What Doctors Don't Tell You blog, a campaign called Truth About Gardasil was highlighted.

"What they are not telling you is that thousands of girls are having adverse reactions to the HPV vaccines, some have even died – at last count, at least 103 lives have been lost. We have got to do something about this. These girls need our help! These girls are having reactions such as; seizures, strokes, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, headaches, stomach pains, vomiting, muscle pain and weakness, joint pain, auto-immune problems, chest pains, hair loss, appetite loss, personality changes, insomnia, hand/leg tremors, arm/leg weakness, shortness of breath, heart problems, paralysis, itching, rashes, swelling, aching muscles, pelvic pain, nerve pain, menstrual cycle changes, fainting, swollen lymph nodes, night sweats, nausea, temporary vision/hearing loss just to name some of them!"

Actually, the government itself has documented deaths from reactions to the vaccine,although the total doesn't match the blog's claim of fatalities.

Anecdotally, the government's documents confirm:

• The case of a 19-year-old woman who was given Gardasil and reported, "Headache, nausea, dizziness, chilling, tiredness, shortness of breath, complained of chest pain, severe cramps." She died of "acute cardiac arrhythmia."
• A 13-year-old girl was vaccinated and, 10 days later, developed fever. According to federal reports she "did not recover and was admitted to the hospital. … She developed dyspnoea and went into a coma … she expired [that day]."
• And a 10-year-old developed "progressive loss of strength in lower and upper extremities almost totally ... nerve conduction studies [showed Guillain-Barre syndrome]." The case was considered "immediately life-threatening."

Those reports have been monitored over the years by Judicial Watch, a Washington watchdog corruption fighter, since the drug's approval by the Food and Drug Administration

"To say Gardasil has a suspect safety record is a big understatement. These reports are troubling and show that the FDA and other public-health authorities may be asleep at the switch," Tom Fitton, president of the organization, told WND when the death and injury reports were arriving.

Judicial Watch launched a comprehensive investigation of Gardasil's safety record in 2008 after the drug's manufacturer, Merck & Co., began a major effort to lobby in state legislatures to impose requirements that girls be given their product.

It was in 2008 when Judicial Watch obtained documents from the FDA documenting "anaphylactic shock," "foaming at mouth," "grand mal convulsion," "coma" and "now paralyzed" descriptions of the complications from Gardasil. The drug is intended to address the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, believed by researchers to be an indicator for future cases of cervical cancer. The company wanted it to be mandatory for all schoolgirls.

The federal reports document some three dozen deaths in the United States, although an activist organization claims there have been almost 70 deaths, nearly 800 "serious" reactions and thousands of minor reactions.

Merck spokeswoman Jennifer Allen Woodruff told WND that the drug addresses a medical need, that of reducing the rates of HPV.

She said it has been approved widely around the world, with 120 countries having examined and approved its use.

"Nothing is more important to Merck than the safety of our vaccines and those who use them," she said. "The facts about Gardasil are clear and its efficacy and safety … were established."

She declined to say that Merck had not lobbied state lawmakers for laws that would force the vaccine on children and families, instead offering that the company focused on lobbying efforts regarding the "potential school requirements" in some states.

She said the company's goal was simply to provide information to those who made such decisions.

However, the vaccine has had a few bumps. Agence France-Presse reported in 2009 that Spanish authorities withdrew tens of thousands of doses of the vaccine when two teen girls were hospitalized.

In the United Kingdom, an investigation was launched after two young girls died following their injections of the drug.

And the Daily News and Analysis from India said the Indian Council of Medical Research suspended a cervical cancer control vaccination program for girls after four deaths and complications for 120 more.

The Truth about Gardasil has launched a video, called One More Girl, that publicizes "questions" about Gardasil's safety.

Clark Baker of the Office of Medical and Scientific Justice said the performance of the Gardasil product itself doesn't matter much.

"The problem is when government officials or legislators order parents and require schools to give vaccines that are unproven."

LifeNews reported that Perry has acknowledged that the administrative order he issued was a mistake.

"I signed an executive order that allowed for an opt-out, but the fact of the matter is I didn't do my research well enough to understand that we needed to have a substantial conversation with our citizenry," he said. "I hate cancer."

At the Alliance for Human Research Protection there was a report just weeks ago that the official death toll from Gardasil had reached 68.

"Mandatory vaccination against HPV is unsupportable. HPV is not communicable in a school setting – it is communicated only by sexual contact. The condition human papilloma virus (HPV) is present in 50 percent of the sexually active population. HPV does NOT automatically develop into cancer in the overwhelming majority of the population. HPV is mostly benign – no treatment needed," the organization said.

"Furthermore, early detection of pre-cancerous cervical cells is readily accomplished by routine PAP smears – which sexually active women in the US routinely have. And pre-cancerous cervical condition is eminently treatable.

"Therefore, cervical cancer does not pose a major danger for all children – therefore, the risk from the vaccine itself is not justifiable," the group said.

WND previously reported when even the Centers for Disease Control told Merck to "back off" on its aggressive campaign to require children to be given the vaccine.

In the latest GOP debate Rick Perry offered up yet ANOTHER lie to justify his Gardasil mandate. I had to shake my head when I heard this…

First, remember the LAST time he lied about this? At the CNN *debate*.

Last night, when asked about the Gardasil mandate, Perry said he was *lobbied* on HPV vaccine, by a woman with cancer.

Congresswoman Bachmann, in the last debate you criticized Governor Perry for his executive order mandating that 6th graders get the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. Then afterward, you suggested that the vaccine was linked to mental retardation and you said that it could be, quote, "potentially be a very dangerous drug."

But the American Academy of Pediatrics has looked at it and says that the HPV vaccine has an excellent safety record. So my question to you is, do you stand by your statement that the HPV vaccine is potentially dangerous? And if not, should you be more careful when you're talking about public health issue?

BACHMANN: Well, first I didn't make that claim nor did I make that statement. Immediately after the debate, a mother came up to me and she was visibly shaken and heart broken because of what her daughter had gone through. I so I only related what her story was.

But here's the real issue, Governor Perry mandated a health care decision on all 12-year-old little girls in the state of Texas. And by that mandate, those girls had to have a shot for a sexually transmitted disease. That is not appropriate to be a decision that a governor makes.

It is appropriate that parents make that decision in consultation with their doctor.

But here's the even more important point, because Governor Perry made a decision where he gave parental rights to a big drug company.

That big drug company gave him campaign contributions and hired his former chief of staff to lobby him to benefit the big drug company.

That's what was wrong with that picture.

WALLACE: Governor Perry, obviously 30 seconds to respond.

PERRY: Thank you.

I got lobbied on this issue. I got lobbied by a 31-year-old young lady who had stage 4 cervical cancer. I spent a lot of time with her.

She came by my office talked to me about in program.

I readily admitted we should have had an opt-in, in this program.

But, I don't know what part of opt-out most parents don't get. And the fact is, I erred on the side of life and I will always err on the side of life as a governor as the president of the United States.

No.  he befriended that dying woman AFTER his mandate.

Perry and Burcham, a teacher from Houston, Texas, struck up an unusual friendship in the months after he issued his executive order. While the Texas legislature was working to revoke the mandate, Burcham traveled to Austin to testify about her personal experience with cervical cancer and how the HPV vaccine might help spare other young women from suffering a fate similar to her own.

And have to say, trying to shift this to opt-in versus opt-out is simply NOT the issue. It is that Rick Perry, to suck up to Merck, issued an EXECUTIVE ORDER to force this shot on 12 year old girls, side-stepping the Texas legislature. He did not do it because of a 31 year old woman with cancer, whom he didn't meet until AFTER he had been STOPPED and was trying to do save face PR.

It's like Rick Perry is trying to float which excuse to use today that people may buy.

Although Rick Perry said at a debate on Thursday that he was “lobbied” by a 31-year-old woman suffering from cervical cancer to require young girls to receive the HPV vaccine, he did not meet the cancer patient until after he had already issued his executive order mandating the vaccine.

It was a rhetorical high point for Perry at the debate in Florida, when he put a personal face on the story and pointed to his friendship with a woman who later died of cervical cancer.

“I got lobbied on this issue. I got lobbied by a 31 year old young lady who had stage 4 cervical cancer,” said Perry. “I spent a lot of time with her.  She came by my office  She talked to me about this program.   I readily admitted we should have had an opt-in but I don’t know what part of opt out most parents don’t get and the fact is I erred on the side of life and I will always err on the side of life as a governor as a president of the United States.”

The woman Rick Perry mentioned in the Republican debate Thursday was Heather Burcham, a thirty one year old woman dying from cervical cancer. But what Perry left out in his answer was that he met her after he issued his executive order.

Perry issued the executive order requiring sixth grade girls receive the HPV vaccine in early February of 2007, and he met Burcham while she was lobbying the Texas legislature to uphold the governor’s executive order. The legislature ultimately ruled against Burcham and Perry and did away with the vaccine mandate.

As first reported by KTRK’s Ted Oberg, the pair struck up a friendship despite the Texas legislature revoking the governor’s mandate.  Perry invited Burcham to a ranch, rode motorcycles with her and even sat at her bed during her final days.  Burcham died in July 2007.

Perry has often referred to Burcham on the campaign trail, saying recently he sat at the bedside of a dying woman with cervical cancer.

The Texas governor spoke at her memorial service in July 2007, saying it was a missed opportunity for the Texas legislature to not uphold his executive order.

“Though some could not see the benefits of the HPV vaccine through the prism of politics, some day they will,” Perry said in July 2007. “Someday they will recognize that this could happen to anyone’s daughter, even their own. Someday they will respond with compassion when they once responded with ignorance. And, someday, they will come to a place where they recognize the paramount issue is whether we will choose life, and protect life, without regard to what mistakes, if any, have been made in the past.”

Perry has endured a lot of criticism from fellow Republicans on the issue, particularly Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who have argued the government should not force parents to inoculate their children against what is essentially a sexually transmitted disease, even if it cuts down on instances of cervical cancer.

The liberal media and their minions are having a field day with GOP Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann because she stood up to crony capitalist Rick Perry at the CNN/tea party sponsored debate.  Michele Bachmann repeated a story told to her by a mother in the audience about daughter having developed some type of retardation after receiving the Merck HPV vaccine.  In a synchronized attack the left has circled to make Bachmann look like a fanatic to get her out of the race.  Rick Santorum also stood up during that debate saying that using and Executive Order to require all 11 and 12 year old girls in Texas to be immunized for something that might never affect them and has now proved to be as harmful as the possible Cancer it guards against is shameful and wrong.   I would say take a good look at the information above and ask you to ponder just  who might be wrong and the bad guy here.

According to Dr. Mercola, "There have been a total of 47 deaths linked to Gardasil since it was brought to market in 2006, according to a press release issued by Judicial Watch, which says it has obtained records from the FDA. In 2008 alone 28 women and girls died after receiving Gardasil injections (up from 19 deaths in 2007). In all the FDA documented 6,723 adverse events related to Gardasil in 2008, of which 1,061 were considered "serious," and 142 considered "life threatening,” the group reported. Further, as Barbara Loe Fisher reported, by the summer of 2009 Gardasil had already caused more than 15,000 reports of vaccine reactions, including more than 3,000 injuries and 48 deaths.
However, it’s estimated that only between 1 percent and 10 percent of vaccine adverse events are ever reported, which means there could actually be anywhere from 150,000 to 1.5 million vaccine injuries related to Gardasil." (See here).
The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) has said that, "With cervical cancer causing about one percent of all cancer deaths in American women due to routine pap screening, it was inappropriate for the FDA to fast track Gardasil. It is way too early to direct all young girls to get three doses of a vaccine that has not been proven safe or effective in their age group."

Even Jay Leno jumped into the Bachmann Brawl, in an interview last week with Bachmann, using a demeaning tone and making the statement that tens of thousands of girls have received this vaccine and it is perfectly safe; there have been no incidents  Really?  Tell that to the people in the videos above (and there are many more stories both on the Internet and not publically reported!).  Governor Perry has been in trouble for crony capitalism before… and this deal with Merck sounds pretty murky to me!

Michele Bachmann is guilty of repeating a story told her by a parent before checking the stats.  As far as I could find there is no information about Gardasil or the like causing retardation, but doesn’t mean it isn’t true either. Bachmann went with her heart and spoke as a mother. Her point was that no state has the right to force children to have these types of vaccines and that many parents just don’t know enough about a vaccine to opt out until it is too late.  At worst, as former Senator and fellow GOP candidate Rick Santorum said in the debate, parents should have to opt-in if they want their child to receive a shot like this and don’t have the money to go to a private practitioner… not opt-out.

Sarah Palin might have sounded like an ally of Representative Michele Bachmann on Monday night when she assailed a short-lived Texas mandate that girls receive the H.P.V. vaccine, calling it a possible product of “crony capitalism.”

But, as she continues to consider her own presidential bid, the comments could also be interpreted as her first overt attack on Gov. Rick Perry, the man who signed the 2007 order -– a move he later withdrew and was forced to defend at the Republican debate on Monday night.

“I knew even at that time something was up with that issue,” Ms. Palin said on Fox News Channel after the debate, noting that Mr. Perry’s former chief of staff had ties to Merck, the company that manufactures the Gardasil vaccine. “And now we’re finding out, yeah, something was up with that issue. It was an illustration or a bit of evidence of some crony capitalism.”

All three politicians – Ms. Palin, Mrs. Bachmann and Mr. Perry – would need to rely on both social conservatives and Tea Party activists to win the G.O.P. nod. So it’s not hard to see why the issue is proving appealing fodder for the two women. The can use it to undermine Mr. Perry’s credibility with social conservatives by noting that he would have required girls under 12 to be inoculated against the virus that causes cervical cancer, which is generally transmitted sexually. And the argument that his move was influenced by donations and ties to lobbyists appeals to Tea Party supporters skeptical of government authority and backroom political dealing.

When Ms. Palin first used the term “crony capitalism” earlier this month to describe generally the process by which lawmakers become wealthy by using taxpayer dollars to benefit corporations and donors, she was talking about Mr. Perry.

In fact, up to this point, she had resisted applying any criticism directly to him. Last year, she campaigned for Mr. Perry as he fought back a challenge from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in the Republican gubernatorial primary. In January 2010, she posted a note on Facebook saying she looked forward to supporting him and other candidates “so they can continue to fight for our American values.” (The other two she mentioned by name, by the way: Senator John McCain and Mrs. Bachmann.)

During that race Ms. Palin said he “walks the walk of a true conservative,” and the two are thought to have a cordial relationship off the trail.

Up to this point in the G.O.P. primary, Ms. Palin has called Mr. Perry a “fine candidate” and defended him after he called Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke’s approach “treasonous,” saying he was “voicing great concerns that many of us share.”

And during a recent trip to Iowa, when asked to contrast their records as governor, the former Alaska governor declined, noting that Texas has a weak executive.

“That doesn’t mean he’s doing a better job or worse job than any other governor, including myself,” Ms. Palin said.

Mrs. Bachmann is taking the the “crony capitalist” line and running with it. We’re still waiting to see whether Ms. Palin lets the Minnesotan continue to be the sole beneficiary, or if she’ll start using the phrase in her own campaign.

Katie Couric Reports on Serious Vaccine Safety Issues – Finally!!

There are new concerns about Gardasil, the vaccine that prevents a virus that may cause cervical cancer.

What makes this new information even more compelling is that Spain actually withdrew 75, 000 doses of the vaccine from their market just last week.

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) has compared Gardasil adverse events to the meningitis vaccine; Gardasil injections resulted in three times the number of Emergency Room visits -- more than 5,000. Reports of side effects were up to 30 times higher with Gardasil.

Barbara Loe Fisher, co-founder of the NVIC, said,

"Now we know from this report that there are more reactions and deaths associated with Gardasil than with another vaccine given in the same age group. It's irresponsible not to take action."

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Over 10,000 adverse reactions, including 27 deaths, have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) in relation to Gardasil. Yet, the CDC and FDA are alleging that the vast majority, or even ALL, of these cases are unrelated to the vaccine. Therefore, they claim, Gardasil is safe.

Says Barbara Loe Fisher, President and co-founder of the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC):

“The tragic story of Gardasil vaccine is one that is playing out real time in the homes of trusting parents, who thought they were doing the right thing to try to make their daughters "one less," and in the 21st century cyberspace forum of public opinion as well as on television.”

The Gardasil vaccine is one of the most blatant deceptions going on in modern medicine. Well-meaning mothers are being deceived into thinking this shot will protect their daughters from cervical cancer, and some of them are now wondering HOW and WHY their young child died or became suddenly paralyzed.

NVIC Petitions White House and Congress to Investigate Gardasil

On February 9, the NVIC launched a petition and issued a national press release calling on President Barack Obama, his Administration and Congress, to investigate the fast track licensure and universal use recommendation of Gardasil in 2006, and the dismissal of more than 10,000 reports of Gardasil-related reactions, injuries and deaths to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System as a "coincidence" by federal health officials.
NVIC's latest Gardasil risk report, which compares the number and severity of adverse events reported to VAERS through November 30, 2008, reveals that death and serious health problems such as stroke, blood clots, cardiac arrest, seizures, fainting, lupus and rechallenge cases are reported three to 30 times more frequently after Gardasil vaccination than after meningococcal (Menactra) vaccination.
Barbara Loe Fisher explains the significance of this fact:

“If the deaths and serious injuries reported after Gardasil were only a "coincidence," there would be little or no difference between the frequency and severity of vaccine-related adverse events between two vaccines, if the vaccines were equally reactive, and the number of doses were roughly the same.
Gardasil and Menactra vaccines were licensed within a year of each other and recommended by the CDC for universal use in 11-12 year olds.

Although Menactra is given to boys and girls and has already been mandated in many states for high school and college entry, Gardasil is only given to girls and is not yet mandated.

Menatra is given as a one-dose series and, by February 25, 2008, the CDC reported that about 15.5 million doses of Menactra had been distributed in the U.S.. Gardasil is given in a three dose series and the CDC reported that, by July 2008, about 16 million doses had been distributed in the U.S.
This means that about 15 million doses of Menactra were given to about 15 million boys and/or girls and about 16 million doses of Gardasil - if every girl got three doses - were given to about five million girls.

It is individuals - not doses of vaccine - who collapse, convulse, become paralyzed, have heart attacks, develop lupus and other chronic health problems after being vaccinated. The fact that death and serious health problems are reported 3 to 30 times more frequently after Gardasil than after Menactra is highly significant and it is irresponsible for federal health officials and Merck to blow it off as unimportant.”

What Does Merck Have to Say About it?

It’s incomprehensible that the CDC, FDA, and Merck -- the makers of Gardasil – cannot see the facts presented in this VAERS analysis, and choose instead to cling to worn-out propaganda slogans and pre-written advertising messages that fly in the face of reason.

In the hours before the CBS News report shown above was broadcast, Merck addressed the differences between adverse events associated with Gardasil and Menactra as follows:

"It's important to remember that the proven benefit of GARDASIL is that it helps prevent cervical cancer caused by the two virus types responsible for most cases of cervical cancer.

Nothing is more important to Merck than the safety of our products and we carefully monitor the safety of GARDASIL on a routine basis. Experts at the FDA and CDC also continue to review data and, as recently as four months ago, said "GARDASIL continues to be safe and effective, and its benefits continue to outweigh its risks."

NVIC is not a medical organization and has a long history of raising concerns about vaccines that are in direct conflict with the opinion of leading medical experts. We encourage consumers to get reliable information about the safety of vaccines from www.cdc.gov."

Spain Already Removed the Vaccine

Spain has, as recently as last week, withdrawn 75, 000 doses of the HPV vaccine from their market, after two teenagers who received the shots were hospitalized.

Seems they weren’t as influenced by the drug company’s rhetoric as U.S. authorities, and are more concerned about the safety of their citizens.

Get Involved and Help Save the Daughters of This Nation

Says Fisher:

“In the past 27 years, the stories of death and brain damage that have been reported to the NVIC have never changed. Whether the vaccine victims are 15 months old or 15 years old, the stories are the same: a trusting parent took a bright, healthy child to a doctor for a routine vaccination and the child was never the same again.
The Gardasil vaccine was inappropriately fast tracked and licensed by the FDA and recommended by the CDC with too little attention paid to the reports of brain and immune system dysfunction that developed after vaccination in pre-licensure clinical trials.
That same cavalier attitude toward Gardasil-related deaths and serious health problems, which have been experienced by many girls and young women after licensure, is inexcusable.”

Most Americans have blindly placed their trust in the vaccine makers and in federal health agencies, whose responsibility is to ensure that drugs and vaccines licensed for public use are safe, effective and necessary.

However, over the years it has become very clear that those responsible for protecting your health are not looking out for your best interest and that of your children.

And if they won’t do it, then it is up to you and me to do it.

There are striking parallels between how those operating the mass vaccination system reacted in the 1980's to persistent reports that the DPT vaccine was harming more children than originally assumed, and the way they are reacting now to persistent reports that Gardasil is more reactive than it was originally assumed.

Assumption of safety is no substitute for proof of safety.

And turning away from human suffering in order to protect the status quo is not the way to run a government that needs the trust and support of the people.

In the 18th century, Queen Marie Antoinette looked down at a starving people pleading for bread to stay alive and said "Let them eat cake." It is time for everyone in government, industry and medicine to take a different approach to persistent reports of vaccine injuries and deaths or risk metaphorically suffering the same fate that ended the monarchy in France.

In the 21st century, today's peasants don't have pitchforks - they have laptops, desktops, smartphones and the internet.”

Another Gardasil Scam - Don't buy into the penile cancer myth

For men, few phrases can make you cringe as quickly as this one: penile cancer. And that's the exact reaction Big Pharma is banking on -- because do they ever have a "cure" for you and your sons. When I read in the Journal of Clinical Pathology that Spanish researchers had identified human papillomavirus, or HPV, as the culprit for just under half of these penile cancer cases, I knew exactly what was coming next: Gardasil. Merck has been trying to force this poisonous vaccine into little girls around the world, with deadly results. In addition to being linked to dozens of deaths, other little girls have been stricken with extensive nerve damage and even Lou Gehrig's disease from this supposed cure. With "cures" like that, who needs cancer? So while Merck pushes to make this vaccine mandatory for young girls, an increasingly enlightened public has been pushing back. This dirty drug is now in danger of becoming a big flop for Big Pharma -- so the race is on, not to improve the vaccine, but to find another way to sell it. But don't you fall for this penis panic. No matter how scary it sounds, penile cancer is incredibly rare, accounting for less than 1 percent of all cancers here in the United States. There are just 26,000 cases of it each year -- in the entire world. It's so rare that when I mention it to people, the first reaction is often, "You can get cancer there?" Yes, you can -- but it's pretty unlikely. You'd be far more likely to suffer the side effects from the "cure" than the disease itself. Speaking of cancer quackery -- wait until you hear the latest news on prostate cancer. Prostate cancer: the big scam "What you don't know can't hurt you" may not sound like a very reliable medical maxim. But when it comes to cancer, you can bet your prostate it's true. That's because what you DO know usually leads to a surgery that you probably never needed. And when it comes to prostate cancer surgery, that means side effects such as impotence and incontinence. That's an awfully high price for a little bit of needless knowledge, and it's all because of those needless PSA tests. I've been called a lot of unkind words for saying that PSA tests are unnecessary and unreliable, and now I'm waiting for my apologies. The latest vindication can be found in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, where I read a new study that concluded that PSA tests have led to mass over-diagnosis and mass over-treatment. At the same time, a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that surgery to remove low-risk prostate cancer tumors can be delayed for years with no increase in the risk of death. But few men choose to go the "wait and see" route. In this large-scale study, researchers followed more than 50,000 men since 1986. Of them, 3,331 eventually got that prostate cancer diagnosis. All but 342 of them -- a little more than 10 percent -- opted for surgery. I read an article over the weekend, that was originally written in July 2008, by Dr. Edward C. Geehr, M.D. about oral sex causing throat cancer

In an era of HIV and chastity rings, teenagers and young adults – roughly 75% of them – have turned to oral sex as a “less risky” option. But it’s not safe sex. And while it won’t get you pregnant, it can still get you into big trouble. For the first time ever, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have established a link between oral sex, the human papillomavirus (the same virus that causes cervical cancer) and throat cancer. That adds to a roster of risks already tied to oral sex: herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, and HIV…

This is scary news for the rising numbers of young people choosing oral sex over intercourse.

One Johns Hopkins professor notes that since 1990, the percentage of male patients at his clinic alone who have had oral sex has risen from 50% to about 75%; for women and girls, from 25% to about 75%.

That’s a huge number exposing themselves to this cancer …  And the article went on~

As I was reading... the obvious kept slapping me in the face.  All of this is pretty much a result of promiscuity, kids having unbridled sex, irresponsibility and bad living.  And the only way we are going to get this under control is to get our lives and standards under control.  It is pretty sad to think that we are living in an era that by the time our kids graduate from college and life is really supposed to begin their health and sex lives are already damaged for good.

A botanical ointment containing a green tea extract called sinecatechins is an effective treatment for external genital and anal warts, according to the results of a controlled study. Genital and anal warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), and there has been a lack of effective, well tolerated treatments. Researchers assigned over 500 adults with 30 warts to either sinecatechins ointment or a placebo. In the sinecatechins groups, warts cleared completely in roughly 57 percent of patients, compared to just 34 percent of subjects in the control group. The rest can lead to skin infections that cause genital warts or common warts on your hands and feet. Although these are very common viruses, and an estimated 25 million Americans have HPV infections, there’s actually little cause for alarm because, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states, “In 90 percent of cases, your body’s immune system clears the HPV infection naturally within two years.” This is true whether the infection is the type that can cause warts or cancer.   And as you will see, simple alternatives exist in lieu of more dangerous alternatives to battle this common virus. The Many Healing Powers of Green Tea Green tea catechins are a class of polyphenols, which are naturally occurring antioxidants. In fact, citrus juice increased available catechin levels by more than five times, causing 80 percent of tea's catechins to remain bioavailable. Green tea has even been found to have fat-burning properties, and now we can add topical green tea catechins for the treatment of genital warts to the growing list of its healing and health-inducing properties.  Which is a great thing considering the unacceptable -- to me, and many other natural health experts -- alternative of the HPV vaccine.  Do You Understand the Risks of the HPV Vaccine? The marketers of Merck’s HPV vaccine Gardasil would like you to believe that getting your daughter vaccinated can save her from HPV related illnesses like cervical cancer and genital warts.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  First of all, the Gardasil vaccine contains just four types of HPV out of the more than 100 strains. If you contract one of the 96+ types that aren’t included, you’re out of luck. And, if you’ve already been exposed to one of the four types of virus in the vaccine, it doesn’t work against those either.  So, even if you accept the risks and get vaccinated, your chances of getting some form of HPV arestill very high. Whether or not the HPV virus will lead to genital warts or cervical cancer, however, depends in large part on the state of your immune system. Personally, I don’t see how the mediocre-at-best benefits of Gardasil could possibly outweigh its risks.  As of last October, 3,461 complaints about Gardasil had been filed with the FDA's Vaccine Adverse Event Report System (VAERS), and 11 girls had died after exposure to the vaccine.   I just checked the VAERS database as I sat down to write this article, and it now contains 6,760 adverse event reports, and 16 deaths. The numbers just continue to get worse.  Get a Clue!!   In my neck of the woods they call this increase a giant clue.  So if you haven’t already figured out to avoid this vaccine you will want to do more homework. Another point to consider is that you can’t sue the vaccine manufacturer if your child dies.  These companies have cleverly manipulated the government so they are immune from prosecution and have made the U.S. taxpayers foot the bill for the hundreds of millions of dollars that are paid out to families of children who are harmed or killed every year from vaccines.   Even though it is incredibly difficult -- nearly impossible -- to get one of these payments, there have already been more than $1.5 billion dollars given to affected families. So ponder on these stats if you haven’t already taken a firm position on the vaccine issue.  How Does HPV Vaccine Kill?   The causes of death include blood clots, acute respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and “sudden death” due to “unknown causes” shortly after receiving the vaccine. Clearly, no one knows the full extent of the biological harm that this vaccine inflicts. But I think most people would agree that teenagers don’t normally drop dead of natural causes. Even more disturbing is the fact that these numbers don’t seem to shock or dismay officials. They’re “consistent with those expected from any vaccine.”  According to the American Cancer Society, some 3,870 women will die from cervical cancer in the U.S. in 2008. Well. We’ve already lost 16 girls, some as young as 12, in the effort to spare them from the possibility of cervical cancer later in life.   Surely I’m not the only one who sees that as morally reprehensible! And how many people have everdied from genital warts?  Cervical Cancer Virtually 100% Avoidable Cervical cancer is well documented to be caused by an infection acquired through sexual contact. So it is behaviorally avoidable. According to a New England Journal of Medicine study, the use of condoms reduces the incidence of HPV by 70 percent, offering FAR better protection than Gardasil. According to the CDC, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in America. More than 6 million women contract it annually, yet as I already mentioned, less than 3,900 women die from cervical cancer out of those 6 million. Why? Because your immune system is usually strong enough to clear up this kind of infection on its own, and does so in more than 90 percent of all cases. Rather than subjecting your daughter (and now possibly your son!) to this unnecessary and potentially dangerous vaccine, you may want to nip the problem in the bud before it ever starts. Here’s how: Recognize that cervical cancer (or any cancer) is not caused by a “vaccine deficiency.” Talk to your kids about HPV. This infection is sexually transmitted, so it is 100 percent preventable through lifestyle choices.
